What is “love”? If you were to ask people what love means you would get many different answers and they would all be right. Love is often describe as the object of our affection, an object, a person, or an idea, ect. Another thought is how strong or how long will that love last? I think that for the most part, love will last as long as we what whatever it is we love. We can even make love last longer if we are willing to put the time and energy to fan the flame of that love. This type of love would be most evident in a relationship with another person. Today I would like to start looking at the fruit of the spirit, Galatians 5.

There is a love that can only come from God. It is a love that surpasses all other types of love in the depth of the love. God’s love is everlasting, it started before time began and will last after time is no more. This love dose not depend on the person being loved but is available to all who will receive it.

In 1 John 4: 17 we find that God is love and all who live in love lives in God and God in them, and our love grows to perfection. How do we get this love? Romans 5: 5 tells us that God gives His love to us and places it into our hearts. We receive this love when we choose to have a relationship with God by believing on him. See John 3: 16 and 17.

If God has placed His love into our hearts why does it need to grow to perfection? Galatians 5: 22 states that the gift of the spirit is love. It continues that love is joy, peace patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Can we say that our love has been perfected? Almost every day there is something that will happen to prove my love is not perfect.

Love is Joy. This is a joy is that Jesus has over come sin, and that God has forgiven our sins. Since the spirit of Christ lives in us we to have overcome sin and live in the presence of God even when the world around us and our lives are in conflict.

Love is Peace. This is not the peace that is the absence of conflict, fear or that of the hippie movement but rather the peace that God gives. It is the peace that belongs to God and he has given to us. We have peace that God is in total control and as we walk in His love we will have peace in our spirit over the turmoil around us. My son was a new driver when he had to stop at the bottom of an icy hill. He said that he was nervous but at the same time he felt calm to do what needed to be done to stop the car.

Joy and peace are two parts of the fruit of the spirit which we will be looking at in the coming weeks. Jesus portrayed the different aspects of the fruit of the spirit. It is my prayer that you will see areas that your love can grow as we imitate Christ.

May the God fill your heart with love as you imitate Christ.
