In our society today if someone can no longer care for themselves we place them were they can get help. It has not been that many years ago that families would often care for their invalid family members at home. Which method is best? Both methods take care of the physical needs but what about their spiritual needs?

Let us look and see how some of the invalid people were dealt with in the time of Jesus.

We find invalid people at the entrance to the city, the market, the temple begging for money. This treatment was to fulfill the requirement that everyone should earn their own living and those who could would give a little to them. Some at the pool called Bethesda to be healed. This pool is where we will find Jesus today.

Jesus was coming to the city for the feast. As he was passing the pool of Bethesda he saw a man that had been an invalid for 38 years. He stopped and asked the man “do you want to be healed?” The man said yes but I have no one to help me get into the pool when the water moves before someone else goes down and is healed.

This man was considered to be a sinner because of his problems. As a sinner he was banned from entering the temple to worship God. The priest would have nothing to do with him. At this time he did not have family nor friends close to him that could help him into the pool. What a sad state to be in.

Jesus had compassion on him. Jesus said to him take your bed and walk.
Can you feel the joy this man had? He had been unable to walk for 38 years and now he can. The joy he must have had could been seen as he left that place whole. He runs right into the priests that tell him he is breaking the law by carrying his mat on the sabbath. He responded by telling them that the man who healed him said he could carry.

Jesus found him latter and told him not to sin or something worse may happen to him.

Through this we see that Jesus is Lord over time. We see first that taking care of the physical need occurred even tho the man had been an invalid for 38 years. We also try to take care of the needs of our loved ones. The other thing we see is that even after 38 years Jesus was able to meet his spiritual need.

Many of you reading this today can relate to the man. He had been an outcast for a long time but Jesus came and ministered to him. A friend of mine once told me that once we get so old that we are set in our ways and will not be able to be saved. How long did it take for you to find God? It may be that it took this long because you were not ready to receive Jesus. It may have been that you needed to go through what you did so you can help others going through the same things. Chances are you can look back on your life and see how God had been watching over you all the time.

David Wilkerson tried to see the Chicago seven several years ago. He was not successful at first but he did meet a gang member. It was through this meeting that Nickie Cruse was saved and became a minister. As he looked back on his life he saw how God had protected him from a murder charge.

Can we imitate Christ by being compassionate to those who have been without him for years? Share your life with others regardless of the years they have rejected Christ. The mother of a friend of mine would not have anyone talk to her about God. After I visited with her for several month she allowed a pastor to lead her in the sinners prayer.
God Bless you as you continue to imitate Christ.
