Hebrews 2 (KJV)

2 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will
There is a sense that if we do not use what we have learned then we will forget those things we have learned.  Hebrews 2 starts of by saying that we should pay attention to those things we have heard or we will let them slip from us.  What have we heard?  First we have heard that our sins will receive a just reward.  Second if we neglect our salvation we will also fall into sin. Third Jesus proved the way of salvation by signs, wonders, and miracles.
What have we heard?  From the Old Testament we have heard that those who rebel against God will not inter heaven.  They will have their reward which is separation from God for eternity.  We have heard that if we break any of the commandment of God we are guilty of breaking all of them.  Only the righteous person will enter heaven. Who are the righteous people?  They are the ones who have turned and run form commiting sin and chosen to follow Christ.  Also they are the ones who have chosen to do the will of the father.
We have heard that if we neglect this salvation we will likewise receive the same punishment.   How can we maintain our salvation?  We must listen (read) to the word on a daily basis.  As we listen to the word daily we will learn how to live a holy life.  Next we will need a personal relationship with the father.  He is faithful to tell us what he wants us to do.  Finally we must do the will of the father.  Jesus said that only those who do the will of the father will inter heaven.  Some have the idea that if they do what they think they should it is the will of God.  The will of the father is depends on what has God told you to do.
Third how do we know that what we have heard is true?  We need to look for the proof that it is true.  The birth of Jesus was foretold by so many prophecies that it proved he was the messiah.  Jesus preformed many miracles, signs and wonders to prove what he said was true.  Now we know that what God tells us is also true.  In doing the will of the father we need to ask:  does this line up with scripture, is it what God would have me do?
Let us not neglect our salvation and therefore be like the Jews in their unbelief.  The Jews who did not believe were cut off and those who were not Jews and yet believed were grafted into the children of God.
May God bless you as you grow in your faith.
